I still don't understand why. It feels like you guys are assuming that
removals and updates don't work correctly in auto rescan.
Let's assume this scenario:
1. You start to RIP and the ripping software creates some temporary
file, typically a WAV
2. SBS detect this and scans it with no tags (since it's a WAV)
3. Ripper continues and creates a FLAC based on the WAV and removes the
WAV
4. SBS detect this, scans and removes the WAV from SBS and scans the
FLAC
5. You open Mp3Tag or similar software and adjust the tagging of the
FLAC
6. SBS detect this, scans and adjust to FLAC according the the new
tags
In this scenario, the user doesn't have to care, the music file will
just appear in the SBS library. The critical part is just that SBS auto
scanner can handle deletes and updates correctly so it doesn't leave old
data which no longer exists (from deleted WAV and old FLAC tags). It's
also important that SBS can handle cases where the files are modified
during the scanning operation.
Assuming this scenario just works and assuming it won't use up too much
resources, I can't see why it needs to be possible to turn off.
We need to start think about normal users and not just us geeks, for us
it's natural that you have to perform a rescan while normal users just
expect the music to appear after they have ripped or copied the tracks
to the correct folder. Since Logitech refuses to add tag
editing/library management functionality to SBS it's very important
that SBS doesn't add extra steps to the ripping process if we like this
to be as easy as possible for normal users.
Since I suspect there will still be some bugs, I agree that there needs
to be a way to manually trigger a full rescan, but this doesn't mean
that there has to be a way to turn off the auto scanning. Maybe we can
just have a preference which isn't exposed in the GUI which can be set
with a text editor if some geek really want to turn it off anyway ?
