Reason for asking is that my Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 2 is sent for
service after it one day suddenly stopped working. And I realized that I
have severe abstinences when not having my Squeezebox/LMS setup
available. I expect to get my ReadyNAS Ultra back tomorrow, but I
started thinking what to do the day it totally stopped working or if I
needed a bigger NAS. Some very important ingredients in my LMS 7.8 setup
are the unofficial Spotify plugin and LAME for transcoding, and as far
as I understand/remember that limits my choices rather much because not
all processor types are supported? If I remember right it has to be
Intel architecture to run LAME?

For the ReadyNAS Ultra there are both well working and easy to install
LMS 7.8 nightlies, the spotify plugin works and there's an
easy-to-install LAME plugin making it possible to internet-stream
transcoded (flac to mp3) music to my smartphone. It's perfect! :-)

I'm not an experienced Linux user and would be pretty lost to install a
regular Debian package. And especially if I also want to feel
comfortable about the security setup. Since my LMS is reachable from the
Internet (so I can stream to my smartphone), security-settings should of
course be configured well.

Are there be any good alternatives to Netgear Intel-based NAS'es, if my
Ultra stops working and I want a NAS with simple easy-to-install
packages with nightly LMS7.8 builds, support for Triode's Spotify plugin
and - very important - support for LAME so I can do the transcodet
streaming to my smartphone?

It is 7½ year ago I bought my first Squeezebox and I love my setup more
than ever even though Logitech "pulled the plug". I expect to keep
LMS/Squeezebox setup for many more years. It just works so well for me!
