Hi,
if you ask here you can find all hints and minor "tricks" to setup a
Debian LMS from scratch. Its quite easy.
And if you ask me if i am a experienced User - nop i am a bit more than
that and i knew some very strange hidden things about some NAS and the
"backdoors" they ve got - and trust me all of them are less secure than
you would expect...
equal if its Thecus, Synology, Iomega or whatever you like
So setting up a secure LMS Server is always better to install a standard
Package then the "firmwares" (in fact mostly nothing else than a
chrooted *ux Version with some scripts and Webfrontend gimmicks) from
the Distributors.
In fact the "security" thing is always in your Network and the NAS is
just a small member of it.
What do you need?
Freenas is a quite easy way for a NAS System on mostly every Computer.
But did you really need a "NAS"?
You need
- a Hardware with an Intel Proz, some Ram (1GB is fine - less is not)
- a Case for some Harddisks
- nothing real expensive it must be just a bit silent.
If you setup a fresh Debian 7.1 from the netinstall source - there is
always SMB marked as "install me".
SMB is the "thing" that you need to access the Files from this System.
A webfrontend is nice but when did you need it?
Just once when setup the System.
Gruss
