Great news ! What would the price be ? Is it not twice as expensive as spotify ? Just thinking about some argument to switch over to wimp ? Or add wimp too .
My usage pattern is a big personal file collection and spotify for travelling and discover new stuff at home. And actually my friends playlist , they all have spotify ? Wimp hifi is probably more interesting if you not having such an extensive collection of files . Can you also buy the files for download ? Soundquality can be thorny issue with these services , the 320k spotify uses ,usually can't reliably be told apart from the real thing in blind tests . But that seems not to be the whole truth with spotify all content is not yet 320k and bizarrely I can code 320k mp3 myself that I can't tell apart from lossles but spotify does sometimes sound different ? What are they doing ? I suspects volume adjustment and compression, Triodes plugin has a setting to bypass this , but wonder if removes all of it in all situations ? Another fact that's rarely talked about is the SQ of mp3 decoders ( or other lossy decoders ) in embedded devices , they are not as good as the one you have on a computer , removal of floating point math etc . Squeezeboxes for example , you can have mp3 artefacts if you decode on the player vs decoding on the server ! Spotify uses ogg if that matters however triodes plugin does a server decode . ( note this does not apply to flac , it easier to decode than mp3/aac/ogg and thus not compromised on the devices ) But for a standalone player ,this removes all these issues no need for a server and you get lossles soundquality , that's probably the killer application . I don't mind having a server ,but if you do this is a very nice option . It's probably very important for WIMP to source good files from the record companies , from a good master and in a lossles format . being one of the resident sceptical people on this forum :) I suspect the record companies can send whatever to streaming services wo any quality controll :/ . and also important not to introduce any volume adjustment or compression ! But this is nevertheless less very good news ! I think this is the future if mores law apply there would be no need for lossy compression of music in the future . Do report how this works out in reality . Other impressions using wimp is the app any good re usability etc ? Is there an mobile app ? Just rambling a bit in this post " thinking out loud " trying to weight this new option to my squeezebox system .
