Full scan times are back to what they were previously, so it looks like the reinstatement of the missing index has fixed that. Buffer values don't appear to have much effect on my system, which stores the cache on SSD.
Thanks for the confirmation: I experienced the same. No improvement using a higher buffer. It's my understanding that scans still are dominated by a.) reading the music files and b.) _writing_ to the database. Profiling showed that the most expensive requests where the inserts and updates.
