Talking from a user perspective, I would expect that when browsing to an Artist from any artist link, I would be able to see all of the albums that the artist has involvement on. There should certainly be no difference between an album that a user has implicitly tagged with an album artist and an album artist that the application has internally chosen. At the moment the browse queries have to work this out, rather than do it once at scan time. I would also include works where the artist is a composer, conductor, band/orchestra. These are included when browsing via All Artists. Implementation wise, there have been many suggestions that the scanner should assign one or more album artist role to each album. i.e. use the album artist tag, otherwise assign one. Then browse queries would be simplified, as there would only need to be album artist and track artist roles (eliminate artist role). Don't know if that helps in this scenario, but it would remove a lot of confusion for people involved in these discussions. An artist appearing on a compilation album or guest on another artists' album is really the same thing - the artist is a guest and should be a track artist role. Regarding the list of albums, if there was another album sort choice "involvement, album", the list of albums could be sorted by role sort order, so regular albums (album artist) appear first, followed by composer, conductor, band roles, with guest appearances/compilations (track artist) albums being at the bottom. I think that's a fairly trivial change to make and make a lot of users happy (would work consistently in each type of UI)!
