I have to start off by saying that I have Composer, Band and Orchestra in Artists turned off, so the only thing I've ever seen in Artists is artists and albumartists added to track metadata. I've never understood the purpose of Band or Orchestra as tags - to me they're the artists I'd enter as artist or albumartist. If I really want to go to the nth degree re bands and artists I would enter artist=Fleetwood Mac\\Lindsey Buckingham\\Stevie Nicks\\Mick Fleetwood\\John McVie\\Christine McVie, albumartist=Fleetwood Mac. So for my purposes Band and Orchestra (in the absence of any further functionality attached to them) are redundant. I think it's great that metadata is being exposed for leverage to a higher degree than in the past and whilst differentiation of albumartist and artist is of little use to me as discrete entities, I can see Composer becoming useful to me in that I can then start exploring tracks by songwriter for genres other than Classical and by Composer where Classical music is concerned. Leveraging it effectively will require a metadata cleanup/ normalisation for those fields. Similarly, being able to browse Classical music by Conductor is also very useful. I'm probably a classical music philistine though as I tend to focus on the Artist rather than the Conductor or Composer so would be less inclined to seek out a particular work or conductor as opposed to seeking out a particular artist. So for example when thinking about violinists I know I prefer Anne Sophie Mutter over say Janine Jansen, so I'll seek her our rather than a specific piece of music. This could be predominantly because my knowledge of classical music is poor and may change as my knowledge increases and I start seeking out various performances of a particular work with a view to selecting a favourite. When it comes to tagging classical music I use whatever allmusic.com provides, so for example the following album 'Herbert von Karajan / Anne-Sophie Mutter - Mendelssohn and Bruch: Violin Concertos' (http://www.allmusic.com/album/mendelssohn-and-bruch-violin-concertos-mw0001837120)would be tagged as follows: Titles: Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64: Allegro molto appassionato Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64: Andante Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64: Allegro non troppo - Allegro molto vivace Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor, Op. 26: Prelude. Allegro moderato Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor, Op. 26: Adagio Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor, Op. 26: Finale. Allegro energico - Presto Example of a single track: [image: http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/ee434/audiomuze/Mutter_zpsfe57324a.png] So, does what 7.9 work with my tagging philosophy? Yes, in fact I'll get more out of LMS than I have to date, particularly insofar as Classical music and Composers is concerned Could things be further enhanced? Yes. Am I your typical user that just wants to play tunes or heaven forbid, albums? No. Tunes are what Compilations and Smart Mix are for - used when you have people over for dinner etc. Artists and Albums are predominantly how I listen, and sometimes I like to hone in on one particular artist and listen to all the stuff he/she's made, and I like to know who they've collaborated with and listen to what they did in that collaboration. It frustrates me that when I view Lindsey Buckingham as an artist I'm presented with over 50 album entries, (albumartist, guest artist and compilations all mixed into one) sorted by "year and artist" or artist, and that sorted by "year, albumartist" or "albumartist, year" is not an option. I want to see his own work as distinct from his work with others as distinct from his songs that happen to appear on compilations. Optionally using albumartist rather than artist in the sort criterion will achieve most of that that, no other changes required (even if it means 1) the list wont be stricly sorted by the artist I'm browsing followed by guest appearances followed by compilations ; and 2) compilations on top of that list because the albumartist field is blank [in which case I could explicitly add VA as albumartist and solve that too]).
