Any format. Nothing in the logs, any specific logging I should enable?
It only happens when queueing up new songs, so browse to a new folder in
iPeng and play that folder by tapping a track. If you later go back and
restart the folder from the current playlist it will work fine.

I just tried with your custom BMF mode and the regular BMF mode. I queued up a folder with >500 tracks (it complained about skipping items as I haven't increased the playlist limitation) while playing some music. No hiccup whatsoever. And my server isn't of the fastest kind (some 2-3yrs old Atom based system with 2GB of RAM, slow disks). I could imagine that reading a really large folder (thousands of entries) and/or a slow system might cause buffering issues. But that kind of contradicts your experience where a larger buffer would causing the problem, but not the smaller.

BTW: I didn't find any option to configure the buffer size. Where would I do that?

But for queueing up new tracks the problem shows up nearly 100% of the
time, playing mp3 files.

What kind of server are you using? Running top (in some *nixy system), would the CPU max out, or is it in high wait state (disk IO)?
