As recommended by '*JJZolx*' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?10-JJZolx) I had deleted most of the cache contents in /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache including library.db and restarted LMS and the problem continued to happen. As per your instructions I have stopped LMS and deleted library.db (again) and restarted LMS. It is now doing it's third rescan for no apparent reason.
