Been out of the loop again... Is there anywhere I can get a summary of
the status of 7.9 without picking through long threads full of bug
reports?

The changelog mnyb listed should give a good idea. Make sure you check
the memory settings.

No. Good. Sure!
7.9 is what I'm running all the time (like many others). I usually try
to fix new issues as quickly as possible.
Please note that some of the new stuff can be confusing. Eg. the
fulltext search might lead to slightly unexpected results. This is a
point which needs tweaking, and I wouldn't say I'm done. But it should
give reasonable results in most cases.
