More and more services offer streams in AAC. These unfortunately are not supported on all of our devices. Yet there is one important advantage: higher sound quality at the same bitrate. Sometimes music services seem to be in favor of AAC, providing higher bitrates with that codec only.
On the other hand there are some limitations: AAC online streams can only be played on SB Touch and SB Radio, they cannot be transcoded afaik. And you can't seek within a remote AAC stream. If leaving the old ip3k based players out of the equation: would you prefer AAC over MP3 even at the cost of no seeking?
