 +1 Agree, for non devs talking in decimal terms diminish the wow factor ;)
  so 2.49, 2.50, 2.51 , etc hide the huge change Blender have experienced.
  Is better a versioning system that reflect the magnitude of changes:

   Major Version . Minor Version . Bugfixes

  Major Version represent a core revamp/refactor, (like from 2.49 - 2.5)
so is better from 2 to 3

   Minor Version represent new "big" features added and Bugfixes represent
, well, exactly that and alo minor features and tweaks

   The problem of using whole numbers from one version to another is that
with the development rate of Blender we will reach very quickly the
Maya/Max (in gradual revamp process also) and C4D ;)
