The problem with this is colors are already assigned meaning black - regular orange - selected green - group blue - linked grey - background set / dupligroup instance white - transforming
Some of these with lighter tints for being active. Here are a few ideas on ways around this - which I don't much like :S - but came up with them since SebastianK was asking for this feature recently/ * Have a different draw mode that shows wire colors. (workaround and not elegant but would work). * use some wire outline/halo... would give visual noise but could be made to be OK... still dont like. * From discussion with Sebastian we thought it could be interesting to show objects on the active layer differently. A related topic is how colors should be assigned - per object or using some rule based system so you dont have to manually mess about with colors.
