Just noticed the behavior for VSE mask modifier has been changed in 2.75: https://developer.blender.org/rB6786ef6783fa
I mean, of course it is good and convenient in many cases, but not for all cases, to be honest. In some cases (particularly when making movie titles) we do prefer the old behavior.
