I'm not sure if this is already a thing, but here is a script I started to speed up texture painting. It lets you import an image as a brush with the image set as the texture and the brush icon a also set as the image. I'm sure someone else could write it better, but I think the idea is solid. Sorry if this is the wrong place to mention it or if it already exists and I just missed it.
