1. The back of the box is incorrect- the minimum number of gnomes is
three.

2. You fail the roll, and thus die.  However, it's just you who die,
but the sub may still be saved.  The fact that your gnome can only use
the time remining on the track means that actions right at the end of
the game will be particulalry dangerous (due to inability to spend 10
minutes to guarantee success).  In the second situation, you do not
die because you only fry/drown at the BEGINNING of the Updates phase
on YOUR turn.  Thus, if you are in trouble, but the game ends before
your Update phase, you survive and everyone wins.

I had the interesting situation of playing this game and Shadows Over
Camelot back-to-back a few days ago with seven players, both for the
first time (though I had soloed RN).  I liked SOC a lot more, because
it was less repetitive.  We lost both, BTW.
