Thumbs are just for bragging rights.  Hitting a certain amouont of
thumbs on different contributions might get you free microbadges as
well (for example, you need at least 3 thumbs and X amount of photos
before you are awarded a photo uploader microbadge.)

GeekGold is a bit more practical as it allows you to "purchase" items
on the site like your avatar and badges.  It also allows you to
participate in auctions that may be for real items.  Some people
auction off actual money from PayPal for GeekGold which has allowed it
GG to have an actual monetary value.  Not sure what the current rate
is but I think someone just said $1 is worth 12 GG on another thread.

I recently particpated in an auction where I received an open but
never used Modern Art game.  While converting the price into money, I
ulitmately paid a cost to get this game, it was, to me, completely
free.  The seller even paid for shipping.
