Good question. It's seldom intentional.

I have several games which I bought because I really love them, and no
one I know has them, but I find out afterward that my gaming buddies
don't happen to like that one very much, and I can never seem to get
it onto the table.

If I were infinitely practical about making good purchases, I would
poll my wife, my friends, and all my various game groups first before
I bought something, to make sure I have some opponents out there, but
that would introduce a different kind of impracticality I think.
