Because it's your first play I won't insist but softly suggest that
the "advanced rules" (the auction rules) are superior to the "beginner
rules".

I did enjoy my first game but I had a few complaints about how the
tiles come up and turn order (from the beginning player). If you play
with the beginner rules it is completely random as to who picks up the
valcano and so the scoring order is random all except the last scoring
round which is set in stone by who began (more random) but this time
you can plan for it.

My second game I elevated to the "advanced rules" (I quote them
because I think its a dumb name, it should probably be base/auction)
and all my complaints were dealt with right down to the final scoring
round that scores in reverse lead order giving the weakest player to
that point first dibs on freshly excavated temples.

Placing the tiles out ahead of the round gives you a great chance to
see all possibilities in play, takes almost all luck from the game and
poses some really gut-wrenching decissions because your bidding with
your victory points.

I guess it comes down to where you are in the whole gaming scene but I
generally like less luck in a game and so would drop the beginner
rules altogether.
