My step-daughter is now 16. She loved Talisman (3rd ed, but I'd go for
4th ed if you're buying) from the time we got it several years ago,
and usually asks to play this if we have company (it works better with
more people). She loves Fluxx. She slaughtered us the one time she
played Nexus Ops with us (the first time any of us had played it), but
hasn't asked to play it again. When she was younger she enjoyed Cluedo
(called Clue in the USA). She has played the Game of Life elsewhere
and said she wanted us to buy this when we asked what we should buy
her family for Christmas (she has other siblings from her mother's
second marriage, all younger than her).
She seems to particularly like the social aspects of games, and plays
party games at her youth group (although none of the ones she has
mentioned come to mind right now). So games where there's opportunity
for discussion and interaction suit her better.

I also have an 11 year old niece. She does not have the interest/
attention span for games. She always wants to play, but is really only
interested in having a captive audience to talk to. She'll play the
first couple of turns and lose interest, it doesn't seem to matter
what the game is. If it appears that the game is getting more
attention than she is, she gets more and more disruptive.
