As someone who enjoys the core gameplay of these games, I strongly
suggest that you avoid Steam. Go for Age of Steam if you want an ultra
tense fight against the machine. Go for Raiload Tycoon if you prefer a
game that better supports 5-6 players and is more loose (due to the
wide open choice of actions each turn).

Steam is ok if you play the "base" ruleset. It at least has some
significant change to the game. The "standard" rules of Steam are
essentially Age of Steam, but with broken urbanization/production
rules.

Don't fall for the "but Steam is compatible with Age of Steam maps".
This is 100% pure bullshit. The two games are completely different
simply due to the changes to the way cubes are put on the board. The
Age of Steam maps were made with Age of Steam cube distribution in
mind.
