All three games are great.

Railways of the World is an updated version of Railroad Tycoon, with a
name change due to the publisher losing the rights to the old name.
It's a great and accessible game that's turning into more of a "game
system" as they release new expansions for it.

Age of Steam is Age of Steam. That might sound like a rhetorical
statement, but it really is in a league of its own. Having said that,
if you're new to these types of games, Age of Steam could prove less
accessible than the other two.

And then there's Steam. Take the accessibility of Railways and add in
the deep strategy of Age of Steam. It's challenging but making a
single mistake may not cost you the entire game (something that
happens in the unforgiving Age of Steam). New players can play it and
have fun -- it's also a satisfying gamer's game.

My gaming group loves Steam. If you had to purchase one, I'd suggest
Railways or Steam -- both are more open to new train gamers than Age
of Steam, with an ability to ramp the difficulty up. If BGG were up,
however, you could see that I've got all three. If that's an option,
go make yourself a nice, big pile of games (you won't be sorry). If
you can only get one, my $0.02 is to get Steam.
