Absolutely. Something that should have taken 5 minutes can end up
taking hours. Stuff happens. I have no problem with that. None at all.

I have to disagree there. I didn't/don't have access to the
announcement on BGG, but according to the "Heads up" thread here: "
We're performing hardware upgrades...as we switch out old servers for
new ones, replace hard drives, and migrate databases."  And I can't
find it now, but another post here on google explained that just
backing up the database requires the site to be down for a few hours,
and went into more detail about the planned work. It sounded pretty
major, not minimal. The more I heard, the less it sounded like it
would only involve "intermittent" outages.

My suggestions were intentionally zero-cost process improvements
(except for the subscription bug fix thing).
