Figures block like other obstacles, IIRC. So if you can get that tiny needed, you're good - but if you're tracing along the edge of their square, it's blocked.
You might consider a house rule of 50/50 miss chance when shooting around friendlies. Flip a coin - if it's heads, tails you miss, heads you *might* hit depending on the roll.
