In reflecting some more (plenty of time now that BGG is down again), I suppose the house rule should really be an Awareness check for the ducking hero--and sure, if it fails, you still get to roll defense.
If it still bugs you that your teammates are in the way of your targets, then try using weapons/runes with *blast*!
