Nope, that is not an easy fix. I am already subscribed to the announcements forum, but due to a bug in BGG (which has been known for years), my subscription doesn't actually get triggered for these announcements.
And "look at the front page" doesn't help those of us who never actually visit the front page (because we live in our subscription page). +1 for emailing to this list in advance of scheduled outages. Even an hour before would be extremely helpful.
