Google Scholar in the latest release is broken, due to Google Scholar  
going back to the last century (I send them a bug report). The  
nightlies have a workaround.

In this case I'm not so sure. When the view gets too small, I think  
it's more important that the URL field remains visible than the  
buttons, that's the main reason why they're on the right. This  
requirement is much less important for browsers.
