Never realized that I could drag the icon directly to mail program. Never
checked the drop-down menu either ... I was naively dragging the "local url"
text to Apple Mail, and then complained that it didn't work ... :P The
icon-dragging method is very convenient.

What exactly are you dragging, and where are you dragging it from?
You can drag the file icon (from BibDesk's pubs list or an editor
window) to your Mail program, and it should attach it as a file.
Control-click on a file icon in BibDesk will also give you the option
to reveal it in the Finder.  For your specific example of e-mail, you
may also be able to use Publication->Send via Email (although that now
sends HTML instead of BibTeX for some reason).
