One suggestion---add a key word "optics.bib" to all references in that bib;
then you can use that key word or else add them all to a group such as "Optics
References" once you've done the import.

BD has pretty good duplicate-detection. Check under the "database" menu. I
think you are already aware of that? Create a group called "duplicates." Then
get BD to select the duplicates; then drag them all into the "duplicates"
group. Now you should have a group full of pairs of references, and you can
work through them and delete one of each of the pair that you don't like.
(Unless they are exact duplicates, one is usually better than the other. Or,
you might want to combine some of the information from each, for instance, take
some key words from one and add it to the other's key words.)

When getting rid of the duplicates, you will have to decide which cite keys to
keep, unless you've generated them the same way in all your .bib files.

I recommend you make a backup of each bib before starting, in case you have to
revert and start over again.

I hope this helps!

Subject: [Bibdesk-users] Best way to merge bib files?

Hi all,

What's a good way to merge bib files? I have seven or eight, and I'd
like to combine them into a single file. My two main concerns are:
(a) maintaining/enhancing my current categorization, and (b)
efficiently removing duplicates.

For example, my current bib files have names like "optics.bib",
"quantum.bib", "dynamics.bib", etc. How do I best maintain that when
merging? Second, what's the best way to remove duplicates? I can
identify them easily enough, but I don't know how to trim them down.

Suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Chris
