I still can't seem to merge my bib files without also merging the duplicates, so I'm looking for ideas on what might be going wrong. I'm adding one bib file to another as an external group and then using the Database > Merge in External Publications menu item. When I do it, it merges all the items, including duplicates. The funny thing is that when I sent my bib files to Christiaan, it worked properly for him---only the unique items were merged. On the other hand, if I make up some dummy test files, it also works properly for me, so it seems to be something strange about these files on my machines. Anyone have any thoughts on why bibdesk's duplicate identification could be failing? Could it be a problem with the line endings being different in the two files? I'm sort of grasping at straws here. Chris I have no idea what might be going wrong but maybe the following would be illuminating. Conduct a test. Select at random three records from the bibs you want to merge, one unique and two duplicates. Then try it out with this mini file. You could use various degrees of rigor---for instance, view them in a text editor and save it using various line-ending conventions, to eliminate that. Also, you have various bibs, right? Try the test pairwise with each combination of files---maybe just one of them is the problem? Are the records identified as identical if you drag-and-drop them into the same bib file, if you use the "select duplicates" function from the menus? This also might narrow down the source of the problem---is it in the external file merging or not? -- Adam M.
