Maybe once I get used to the new view I won't feel the need for those  
columns, but I like the quick overview they provide of how many and  
which references have attached files/links.

I generally agree. My beef with the current wide detail view is that I  
find abstracts harder to read with long lines and relatively small  
type sizes. Plus I end up with a contest between the number of  
references I can show in the list and the vertical height of the  
detail view beneath the list. A columnar view with shorter lines (like  
a newspaper) is just easier for me to scan through and if it's on the  
side it's independent of the number of articles visible in the list.  
If I designed a template for the preview (which I haven't tried yet),  
I'd put a bibliography-style reference at the top, followed by the  
block text abstract at the full width of the pane with no heading,  
annotations under a heading and then discrete data like date added/ 
modified (as mm/dd/yyyy). Note that this is only a relative beef as I  
really like BibDesk a lot and am definitely *not* complaining.
