Ignoring the philosophical issues, most 'diff' engines allow you to ignore "whitespace" differences. That lets you ignore them, while not forcing everyone to obey "Procrustean" rules :-}
At the risk of being off-topic on this mailing list by discussing such issues, sure enough these days the like of
svn diff -x -wsolves this issue. However the problem with that is that there is always a weakest link in the toolchain that does not provide such options. For example, the diffs automatically sent by email or displayed as html by sourceforce for a project hosted with subversion over there don't skip trailing whitespaces as far as I know. Moreover the philosophical issues can't be brushed aside when it comes to a tool like git which has been written by Linux Torvald!
