I'm so sorry if this sounds like such a simple question, but I have spent hours on various wikis and other sources trying to figure this out:

I am new to LaTeX and BibDesk. How exactly do I use citations entered in BibDesk in an article in my TeXShop file? I read on the wiki that I should just drag the cite button from my BibDesk window to the relevant area in my TeXShop file and then run an applescript from my BibDesk system.

You can also type something like

\cite{termToSearchFor

in TeXShop, and then use opt-esc to see a list of possible matches from BibDesk's database. I find this easier than dragging, but YMMV.

I downloaded the ReplaceCite Applescript (which I found on this wiki) and tried doing this. I got an error message: "AppleScript reported the following error:
TextEdit got an error: AppleEvent timed out."

This AppleScript isn't for use with TeXShop or LaTeX, as far as I can tell. Processing of citations is done from within TeXShop using the Typeset button (if I recall correctly...I don't use TeXShop). You need to run pdflatex, bibtex, then pdflatex twice more to ensure that all of your citations are processed.
