I did notice a noticeable speedup after I replaced my PB G4 by a MBP myself. And for me it's a lot faster. Startup of the app is almost immediate, and loading a file with about 1000 items with about as many linked files takes about 2 sec (and 5 sec for the same file with old- style Local-Url fields and without linked files). The biggest factor in startup time probably is the linked files. Especially when you've stored them (or your database) on a separate volume it may be more dependent on the mount type and your connection than on the computer that you use. It also depends on your URL field conversion options in the Fields prefs.
