The only drawback to this is if you like using latex2rtf, which I haven't managed to get to work with utf-8.

The current development version of latex2rtf should work with utf8. You have to get it from the project's subversion repository, but it's very simple to compile and install.

Note that BibTeX won't necessarily work properly with utf8 (or any other multibyte encoding), so be careful:
