Can't you copy that via the Edit->Copy As menu?  AFAICT that puts a URL object 
on the pasteboard, so I assumed (possibly incorrectly) that it would appear as 
a clickable link in an rich text editor.

If this is why you can't use the default copying, then I think your solution is 
necessary, and nicely done.  It might be easier to use PyObjC to convert the 
citekey to an RTF link, but that's not part of the system on 10.4.
