Instead of using static groups, you could simply create your own custom
fields (Preferences > Fields) for all BibTeX types then add them to the
sidebar (Add Group Field ...)
For example, you could create a field "MyProjects" or "MyClasses", add
whatever Projects you have or Classes you teach and then add the respective
groups to the sidebar.  You can drag items onto the field as you would with
a Static group.  But these are item properties which you can draw on to
create Smart groups.
