Thanks for the suggestion, Christiaan. It pointed me in the direction of a deep, dark, impenetrable forest with a hint of light at the far side :-} I tried a few “standard” .bst files (like abbrv.bst and one of Nelson Beebe’s “author date” .sty files). The first worked as expected, with no errors, and a proper cross reference in the bibliography. The second had the same issue that I did (the extraneous “}" at the end of the cite key). It’s clearly not BibDesk, so I will wander off into the woods now. Cheers, Justin -- Justin C.
