The other way around, importing and merging from the detail file to the master
file, may be a bit more involved. Especially if you (or a collaborator) edits
items in the detail file, and you want to merge these changes with the items in
your master file. Let me give a few more tips that could help you.

You can add items form the detail file to the master file using drag/drop or
copy/paste between documents.

Alternatively (or in addition to that), it can be helpful as long as you work
on the detail file to add an external file group for the detail file to your
master file. From there, you can add use drag/drop or copy/paste. But you can
also use the “Merge in” feature, either from the contextual menu in the group
table or from the Database menu. This will add external items to the master
file if they’re not yet included (check for almost-duplicates though, when you
add items that were edited in the detail file). Items that were just imported
can be found in the Last Im port group, so you could use that to add them to a
static group associated to the detail file.

The harder part may be merging in changes when the detail file was edited.
There are two features that can be helpful. One is the “Merge in” feature I
just described. The other is the “Paste and Merge” feature. This helps you
merge changes to an item in the detail file into a corresponding item in the
master file. Copy the item in the detail file (either from a separate document
or from an external file group), then select the corresponding item in your
master file, and hit Edit > Paste and Merge. So “Paste and Merge” updates
edited items, and “Merge in” adds new items from the detail file. When you com
bine these actions, you should first use “Paste and Merge” and then “Merge in”,
because otherwise you may get duplicate items for edited items.

Christiaan
