*The Power of Possibility* * *Last week we explored ways you can get leverage for breaking old habits & creating new ones. This week, we're going to look at one of the most incredibly powerful forces there is in human beings - a force that is often under-rated or even scorned. In this article, I'm going to reveal the power of possibility. Unless you've spent the past few days on a silent meditation retreat, you're already aware that Barack Obama has been elected as the first African-American president of the United States. As I watched & listened to his victory speech, I felt deeply moved by the knowledge that millions of people had been stirred to action by the possibility of a brighter & more positive future. Obama spoke of his victory as being "...the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day." Hope. He used this short word half a dozen times in the course of his speech, & I started wondering "What is hope?" The American Heritage Dictionary defines hope as "A wish or desire accompanied by confident expectation of its fulfilment." What gets thousands of people turning out to vote who have never voted before? Hope. What encourages people to line up for 3 & 4 hours to vote? Hope. What was it that makes me think that, despite all the challenges, problems & issues in the world & its political systems, it's possible for us to transcend history & create a new world for ourselves, our children & our descendants? Hope. It seems that when people have hope, they will persist in sometimes seemingly impossible circumstances. You may have heard people say that it's wrong to give people "false hope", but as my friend Michael Neill points, there's no such thing as false hope - there's just hope. Of course, in my opinion, hope is a great starting point, but it's also useful to take action. I remember back when I stopped drinking, & life was looking pretty bleak, & people told me it was possible to have a wonderful life without alcohol, & I didn't believe them. I wanted to believe them, but I knew that there was no way that was possible for me. Then one day, I thought to myself "Even though I know it's not possible for me to have a wonderful life without alcohol, maybe it could happen anyway. Maybe there's something that I don't know, in the domain of possibility..." 12 years later, my life is so completely different to how it was back then. As a result of hope. If there's something in your life that you have been thinking is impossible to change / solve / achieve or eliminate, maybe there's grounds for hope. · If you've never believed that you could get fit & healthy. · If you don't think you could ever be wealthy. · If you think it's impossible for you to get really good at NLP. · Whatever it is or has been, there's hope! So experiment with hope this week. If you feel like it, check out Obama's victory speech & notice how he used this powerful word to move his audiences around the world.
