If you're GPS uses AA bats, you could run a dyno with an Ixon IQ and
the ride and charge... charge up those batteries during the day when
you are riding, use your light sparingly, and swap out the GPS
batteries as needed....

But that would be an unapproved secret use of the Ixon IQ, as it is
only supposed to be used to charge the batteries to run the
light... ;)

And there are other homebrew dyno chargers out there... and when you
get to camp you plug into the shower or bathroom or maybe even the
outlet outside your tent.

But if I'm riding a relatively easy route and I plan ahead... agreed -
a GPS might be overkill. But for exploring back roads in order to get
from A to B - it might add a nice dimension to the ride.
