I tried it again, this time installing from the tarball, and can reproduce 
it. The 0 gets produced in one of the cold: functions of the modules - I 
don't know which yet, but that's the culprit. The stack is cleaned 
afterwards. It's probably fixed in my development version where I couldn't 
reproduce the bug.
