  * Jharkhandi boy Dhoni got India's highest Sports Award - Khel Ratna *

MS DHONI, the current Indian captain of the ODI (one day international) and
T-20 teams has been selected for the prestigious Khel Ratan award of
2007-2008. There was a controversy regarding the award which has now been
set to rest with the announcement. The awards would be presented on August
25, 2008 – at that time Dhoni would most probably be in Sri Lanka for the
last of the ODI matches.

The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna is the country's highest honour given for an
achievement in sports. It carries a medal, a scroll of honour and a
substantial cash component. As of 2004-05, when the award was last bestowed,
the cash component stands at Rs. 500,000. The award was instituted in the
year 1991-92 and has been given to outstanding sports persons in each of
many sporting disciplines every year. The Khel Ratna was devised to be an
overarching honour, conferred for outstanding sporting performance, whether
by an individual or a team, across all sporting disciplines in a given year.
So far, there have been 16 awards with Sachin Tendulkar winning it in
1997-98 for his contributions to cricket. Dhoni would be the only other
cricketer in the list. Geet Sethi won it in the inaugural year for
billiards.

Dhoni is an aggressive right-handed batsman and wicket keeper. He has come
through the ranks of junior and India 'A' cricket teams to represent the
national team. Dhoni, referred as 'Mahi' by his friends, made his debut in
the state cricket team during the 1998-99 cricket season and was selected to
represent India-A for a tour to Kenya in 2004.

He scored 148 against Pakistan in his fifth ODI in 2005 - then the highest
score by an Indian wicketkeeper.

Later in the year, he broke his own record as well as set the current world
record for the highest score in the second innings in ODI matches as he
scored 183 not-out against Sri Lanka. The continued success in the limited
overs format secured him a place in the test team and coincidentally he made
his maiden test century in his fifth Test match, when he scored 148 against
Pakistan.

Dhoni is the most loved youth icon of the day and, at present, has a whole
fleet of armed women police to look after him – to prevent him from being
mobbed by his lady well wishers and fans. He won accolades from none other
than General Musharaf, the President of Pakistan for his mane of hair.
Moreover, his strong personality and cool handling of situations on the
field have made a darling of all. Let us hope that he continues to bring
laurels for the country
