Dear friends,

It is now more than 5 weeks after the breach of embankment.
Someobservations can be made at this point:

* Relief organisations and government have been working intensively on the
flood relief effort. The flood relief activities by civil society
organisations do not get much pubicity and the quality of the flood
relief by the government is not so clear to the public. Some may be aware of
the guidelines (http://www.indiawaterportal.org/bihar/?p=102) issued by the
government on standards to be maintained by the district administration. Are
there being followed? We request civil society organisations and others to
write to us on what is going on on the ground, which we will post to the site.
Please mail us at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* Media coverage continues to some extent. Intense online debates are
visible on some mailing lists, but the questions involved are not reaching
the broader public and not looking like they are affecting government policy.
What to do in this situation ?
* Severe flooding in Orissa and elsewhere have caused widespread suffering.
Some aid organisations are reporting significantly less donations in respon
se to the disasters. Perhaps there is a sense of fatigue with all the bad
news.

We welcome your input on all the above, which we will be happy to post to
the website to reach a wider audience. We also request your suggestions on
what India Water Portal can do going forward.

Below are several updates and resources on the Water Portal website:
