*New Delhi:* The Government on Wednesday said it cannot help the sacking of
1,900 employees by Jet Airways and termed it a human resource issue of the
airline.

However, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel - speaking exclusively with
CNN-IBN from the Aviation Summit in Hyderabad - added the Government had all
its sympathies with the bleeding airlines and that Government was seeking
tax cuts to bail out the sector.

"I have full sympathies with the employees who have the situation of having
to face losing of jobs but it is an HR issue of the airline and the
government can do little about it," Praful Patel said, adding, "We appeal to
all to reason. We are doing everything in consultation with the state and
Central government".

Asked if Air India would also consider cutting jobs in the wake of the
crisis in the country's aviation sector, he replied in the negative.

"No...Air India is not going to have any job cuts. Certainly it (the
aviation crisis) will affect the growth plans, it will affect the future
employment opportunities which would have come the way of Air India in case
the aviation industry was in a much better financial health," Patel said,
adding, "But as of now I do not have the luxury to say beyond the fact that
those who are working for the Air India shall continue to do so and we shall
not have any issue of people being laid off," he said.

Patel also ruled out a direct intervention by the government on the issue of
the aviation industry demanding a bailout package.

"The Indian aviation industry has hit a turbulence and it is time for all of
us support the industry in whatever way we can but that does not mean
writing a cheque for airlines... government is not going to write a cheque
for airlines," he said and added help could come in the form of relaxation
in levies and taxes.

"All I know is they are not merging, but talking of cost energies, working
closely together so that they don't incur heavy cost and they can make a
little saving probably to improve bottom line. But if it amounts to
cartilisation or anything which is not in the interest of the industry or
consumer, I am sure the Government and Ministry of Civil Aviation can take
appropriate measures and we will not hesitate to do so in case we find
something going wrong," he said.
