Dear Suresh and Vishal,
Though Chandrayaan-I has been sent to the moon for collecting data on Air,
Water,Soil and its Mineral components etc. - all that is required for human
survival yet it is a scientific and technological feat/ achievement of a
country in which it establishes its capabilities before the World. It will
put India in the group of Nations who have all kinds of potential -
Scientific, Technological, Economic, etc. It is like a child passing his
exams and establishing himself at a certain level in the society. I hope you
understand what I mean. The attitude of the society towards the child gets
fixed on the basis of the marks/ grades obtained by the student.

Such experiments also enhance the knowledge base of the Human Society and
raises the intellectual level of that country in particular. Just take
Newton, Einstein, Faraday, Shakespeare or Kalidas for example. What they did
and what did they get?

Such activities have other meanings also. Developments of this kind are used
for both peaceful as well as Defence/ Offence purposes. I hope you remember
the Star Wars programme of the US. The War Theaters created by them in
Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq were created as testing grounds for their
experimental results and capabilities. India , being where it is, cannot
think of a Military Use of the outcome but it certainly will be used for
good purposes.

A question always remains about the negative effects of these heavy
expenditures particularly on the wretched of the Earth. What do they get?. I
can only say here that all such experimentation get their guidance and
support from the Socio-Politico-Economic forces of a Society. Therefore, it
is dependent on these forces as to whether and how the benefits of the Space
experiments will benefit the different sections and strata of the Society.
