Construction recently began on a project to connect Pheasant Branch Road
with the Middleton Hills neighborhood. By early summer, bicyclists will be
able to access PB Road via the traffic signal at the intersection of
Century Avenue & Donna Drive / Frank Lloyd Wright Ave. The "old"
connection of Pheasant Branch Road to Century Avenue will remain open;
however, the road has been renamed Old Creek Road.
The debate over the future cross-section of Pheasant Branch Road, from
Middleton Hills north into the Town of Springfield, remains unresolved for
now. However, as it considers options for rebuilding the deteriorating
roadway, Middleton's public works department is well aware that it must
remain a bicyclist-friendly route. They know the prominence this route has
in the county and city bike plans. At this point, it would appear that
Middleton's Public Works Committee is leaning toward including bike lanes
in the design of the new roadway. The issue is, should the city promote
the rural character of the road by retaining a narrower cross-section, or
widen the road a bit (which would entail some additional tree cutting) to
accommodate a bike lane or a wide travel lane in each direction?
There has not yet been a thorough discussion about the long-term plan for
this important "urban escape" route. To date, the primary focus has been
on making the connection with Middleton Hills.

Subject: Escape Routes
Here's what I have by way of an update to the escape routes.
There's nothing for the East or North because I've not yet
been out that way. Send updates to me, if you've got 'em
and I'll post here and/or get them on the web.
Northwest:
Pheasant Branch: unknown
Schneider: good, farm "mud" and farm traffic
West:
Airport Rd: good west of Greenway, narrow and rough from M to
Greenway.
Old Sauk: good overall, some construction damage and dirt
Blackhawk Rd: excellent
Old Middleton Rd. in Madison: beware of dangerously rough road
Midtown Rd: fair, construction activity (it's been awhile since
I've been out that way so an update here is needed)
South:
Seminole Highway: excellent
Rim Rock Road: unknown
Capital City Trail: excellent
East:
Broadway: unknown
Femrite: unknown
Buckeye: unknown
North:
Portage: unknown
Other escape routes?
