on CWD in Wisconsin deer herd:

This whole mess is the cat way, way, way out of the bag. Deer will not hang
around an area that is being heavily hunted. Where will they go? Do you
think they will stop at the borders of the cwd zone? do you think they will
stop at the borders between minnesota, iowa, illinois?

Even if the DNR were somehow able to kill all the deer in the affected area
and make all of the infected ones stay within this imaginary district, I've
read that CWD is so persistent that even after decontamination,
sterilization, rest of affected area (for YEARS) and reintroduction of
uninfected herd, the disease will recur.

This whole thing is so ludicrous you almost want to laugh. If you are going
to write letters to the DNR, I'd suggest that you ask them to rid your
apartment complex of roaches by hiring professional roach hammerers to
visit 5% of the apartments and hit individual roaches over the head.

I agree with a previous poster who laid the blame for this mess squarely in
the laps of those who promoted quality deer management ("Let him grow!),
feeding of supplements that contain suspect animal byproducts and terrible
management by the state and its agencies of imported game animals.

I think this whole "aggressive management" thing is absurd and will only
serve to spread the infected animals further afield than they might go on
their own.

Short of penning every deer in the state and testing every deer in the
state which they will never do, I don't think there is a solution to this
except that every deer shot during season will have to be tested and
retested. The industry that has grown up around trophy bucks and game farms
will now get its just desserts in my opinion.

pessimistically yours,

cathy in la crosse
