. . .  and we digress.  Well, the original point of
the email was to find out if there were any studies
that show that mixed-use, compact development had a
lower rate of deaths/injuries due to drunk driving
than communities built around the automobile.  

It was not to say that drinking is bad.  The main
focus or concern with drinking is excessive drinking
and then driving.  Therefore, the root or roots of the
problem is excessive drinking and driving.  If we can
design communities so that folks will not need to
drive to and from the bars then we can lower the
amount of innocent deaths.  Modifying behavior so that
folks don�t drink excess is another option but not one
I�m interested in exploring right now.

I assume from the responses that no one else has seen
any studies on this.  

It just seems to be another reason for smart growth
since one of the goals of development, in my opinion,
is to make the communities safe and accessible.
