I'll be spending the weekend in winter-deficient Northern Wisconsin with a
group who will end up having to drive (yes, drive) back and forth to
Ironwood, Michigan, to find snow for X-C skiing on our annual trip "up
nort' " (Hey, we booked our usual place not knowing what the weather would
be, so not too much choice without forfeiting the deposits.)
Anyway, on the Sundays of that weekend I usually go to church at a tiny UCC
church in the woods. I say usually because sometimes there's a worship
service, sometimes there's not. That led me to drop a note to the pastor
to ask if it's possible to predict when I would and would not find a
worship service there. (It turns out that of the two churches he serves,
the little one is only 1st and 3rd Sundays in the winter.)
Well, what does all that have to do with this list?
Last spring, I recognised the pastor's name (Lynn Larson) in a snippet in
the Wisconsin Environmental Decade newsletter about the group he started,
"Skiers for Global Cooling." (Now is the connection a little clearer??)
In my note, I also mentioned having seen the Environmental Decade item
about him. In his reply he enclosed the group's handout and thought some
might be interested.
INVEST IN SNOW FUTURES!
We are cross-country skiers trying to do our part to reduce global warming.
We are totally nonprofit snow advocates. Please join us by:
1) Signing the "Patriot's Energy Pledge" at <www.saveabarrel.org>. This
involves reducing your contribution to greenhouse gases by conserving energy.
2) Sending a check for $25 to

3) Wearing the Global Cooling Ski shirt you will receive proudly as a way
of spreading the word.
(Long sleeve t-shirts available in M/L/XL. The design shown is a circle
with a skier and snowflakes with "Skiers for Global Cooling" around the
outside of the circle.)

His handwritten comments in his note include:
"I fear it's too little too late to stop climate change... but even if we
could slow it down to add 1 or 2 extra ski seasons before Wisconsin becomes
like Nebraska, it will have been worth the effort."
(I suppose you could add Robbie's usual signature line here.)
I'm thinking of calling him up and suggesting that he carry a box of shirts
in his car on Sunday, so if you'd like one and want to save them the
postage expense AND I'm likely to see you in the near future to exchange
money and shirt, I'd be willing to pick up additional shirts.
Now go have a beer,
Bob Paolino
